Message from our President

BYU DEMOCRATS WEEKLY UPDATE - 12 SEPTEMBER 2007

On behalf of the BYU College Democrats, I’d like to welcome everybody back for another fun-filled semester here in the glowing metropolis of Provo. From everyone I’ve managed to catch up with, it sounds like summer was action-packed and generally productive. We’re excited for the upcoming months, and are jumping right back into things. Here’s what you need to know:

BYU OPENING SOCIAL
Thursday, 12 September 2007 (that’s tomorrow)
240 SWKT (Spencer W. Kimbal Tower)
7:30-8:30pm

Come start the semster off right with the BYUD opening social…we’ll run through our events for the semester, and then hear Dr. Richard Davis, our fearless faculty advisor and chairman of the Utah County Democratic Party, discuss the BYU Democrats and local political activism. Oh, and we’ll have refreshments and lots of interesting, open-minded, and just generally cool people (the kind you didn’t think existed here at BYU) to mingle with, so COME!!

OFFICERS: This ain’t no stinkin’ dictatorship, so we’re looking for help from anyone and everyone! We need help with organizing events, running events, making flyers, making food, making friends, planning bonfires, partying, lining up speakers, debating, writing editorials, underwater basketweaving, service projects, and anything else your scheming little minds can come up with. If you want to get involved, no matter what you’re interested in, we’ll find something for you. So if power-grubbing’s your thing, come talk to an officer at one of our Thursday meetings, just show up at one of our officer meetings, or send an email to president@byudemocrats.org and say I WANNA BE ONE OF YOU GUYS! Officers meetings are from 6:30-7:15pm on Thursdays, 240 SWKT.

SOME AFTERTHOUGHTS:
- This is a hands-on kind of club. Don’t be afraid to comment, criticize, and shake things up. We’re always looking for ideas for interesting speakers, cool campaigns/opportunities, social get-togethers, etc. So speak up, and let us know!
- YOU DON’T HAVE TO BE A DEMOCRAT TO COME AND PARTICIPATE!! We accept people of all nationalities, creeds, clothing-styles, musical preferences, and political persuasions (yes, even Republicans). We’re here to promote an open atmosphere for political discussion that widens our grasp of the world and our role in it. So come as you are, and know you will be welcomed.
- Check out byudemocrats.org. It rocks.

COOL QUOTE:

“Strive to develop a maturity of mind and emotion, and a depth of spirit which will enable you to differ with others on matters of politics without calling into question the integrity of those with whom you differ. Allow within the bounds of our definition of religious orthodoxy a variation in political belief. Do not have the temerity to dogmatize on issues where teh Lord has seen fit to be silent.”
- President Hugh B. Brown, BYU Commencement Exercises, 1968
