Situation in Burma
The military junta ruling Burma (aka Myanmar) has recently begun to violently crack down on protests demanding democracy and human rights. Up to 100,000 Burmese citizens and monks have marched through some of the largest cities in Burma during the last week, and now the government has begun to respond to these peaceful protests with extreme measures. In just the past few days, dusk-to-dawn curfews have been put into place, gatherings of more than 5 people have been banned, and at least 5 monks have been reported killed in clashes with government forces.
BYU students will have booths open between the library and the Wilkinson center on Thursday and Friday, September 27th and 28th, that will have more information on this current crisis and petitions to sign to show your support for the protesters and to ask for international pressure to be brought to bear against the Burmese government’s violent actions against its own citizens.
Also, in a show of solidarity, this Friday (9/28) wear maroon or red–the color of the robes of the monks marching barefoot through the streets of Burma. Help spread awareness of this current problem and support human dignity and democracy the world over!
