Democrats and Friends,

Happy Halloween!  Hopefully our annual romp through the vestiges of
paganism has brought joy and much candy to you…and for those of you
off to the streets tonight, I recommend bringing a big bag for the
treats and a good cover story for the tricks…

Oh, and in the interest of showing that yes, even we the BYU Democrats
can encourage spiritual exploration, I’d encourage looking into the DU
Letter to the Editor today on why Halloween is against the Honor Code.
Interesting stuff.  And I apologize in advance if my unabashed
support of Halloween is offensive to any receiving this email.

OK, on to the good stuff:

MEETING THIS WEEK:

Dr. Gary Bryner, Professor of Political Science at BYU
Thursday, November 1, 2007 - 7:30pm-9pm
240 SWKT

Going green is the hot new things, with celebrities speaking out about
“carbon footprints” and Al Gore winning the Nobel Peace Prize for work
on global warming…but after all the worldwide concerts and CNN
Special Reports, we are left with the question of what should actually
be done about it!  Dr. Bryner specializes in environmental policy, and
will help address your concerns on what we should expect as the best
way forward to address these problems.  This should be especially
informative as election season bears down on us and candidates attempt
to claim the environmental cause as their own.  Come listen to an
expert in the field, ask your questions about environmentalism and
general public policy, and enjoy spending time with your fellow
progressives!  For more information on Dr. Bryner, check out his
faculty page here:

PRESIDENTIAL CANDIDATE DEBATE ON HEALTH CARE:

Been wondering who you should support in 2008?  Let us help…we’ll be
sponsoring a debate this coming Wednesday, November 7, at 7:30PM in
the Varsity Theater at which students will represent the major
platforms from across the political spectrum, from Ron Paul to Dennis
Kucinich.  This should be informative and entertaining so come, bring
your friends, your questions, and support political discussion on
campus.

PAID POLL WORKER POSITIONS AVAILABLE:

Utah County is looking for students to help out on Election Day,
November 6, as poll workers.  You must attend two training meetings
and be available all day on the 6th; poll managers will get paid $180,
poll workers will get $100, and standbys, who may not work at all,
will get paid as well for the time spent in training and more based on
whether they work.  This is a great way to make a few bucks and help
out with our nation’s greatest right — if you’re interested please
call Barbara Lowe at 801-851-8125 for more info.  The only catch is
that you must be registered to vote in Utah, and you must reside in
Utah County.

VOLUNTEER OPPORTUNITY - IMMIGRANT CITIZENSHIP AND ENGLISH CLASSES

We run a U.S. Citizenship Test Preparation Class for legal resident
immigrants preparing to become U.S. citizens, every Tuesday and
Wednesday from 6pm-8pm at Dixon Middle School (800 West, 200 North,
Provo).  We are always looking for volunteers, it’s both a great
public service and an excellent review of basic civics, and all the
classes are in English (no need to have Spanish skills).  Also, the
same center operates around 7 English classes at the same time, all of
which are in need of volunteers.  So please some by Dixon Middle
School Wed. and Thurs. and help out!

HOUSE PARTY TO HELP GET OUT THE VOTE ON REFERENDUM 1

I’ll be opening up by house this Saturday, November 3rd, at 4pm for a
house party where we’ll be watching a video from the Democratic
National Committee and then hitting the streets to knock on doors of
registered Democrats encouraging them to vote on November 6th,
particularly remind them about the vouchers referendum.  This should
be a low-confrontation experience, and is probably the most effective
thing you can do to effect the voucher decision process.  There will
be food, so come over after the BYU football game, hang out, and make
a difference!  If you plan on coming, please send an email to
raiseup@byu.net to let me know, since my house isn’t that big.  And
I’ve already had all the visits from the fire department I need.

PRESIDENT BILL CLINTON VISIT TO SALT LAKE CITY

Good ol’ Bill is making a stop in SLC to fundraise for Hillary this
coming Sunday, November 3, at the University of Utah Union Building at
3:00 PM.  Tickets are $50, and can be purchased here:
https://contribute.hillaryclinton.com/events/saltlake1104.html.
We’re looking into the possibility of reduced tickets for the club,
and if we find out anything we’ll let you know, but that’s a pretty
iffy thing at this point.

UTAH COUNTY DEMOCRATS INFO

If you’d like to get the Utah County Democrat newsletter, send an
email to subscribenews@utahcountydems.com.  This is a great way to get
news on local politics and get information on ways to get involved.
Also, the UC Dems are hosting an essay contest entitled “Why I’m A
Democrat”.  Since we all get this question asked of us on a regular
basis here at BYU, I figure all of ya’ll could do well…more info
here: http://www.utahcountydems.com/content/view/81/96/

Keep your eyes and ears peeled for cool lectures/opportunities on
campus, get involved, and keep on fighting the good fight for moral,
responsible policies locally, nationally, and worldwide.
