NY Times article

I’m no fan of Mitt Romney, let’s be clear.  But there was an article in the New York Times that was misleading about the LDS faith which I found to be ignorant and somewhat offensive.  Check it out and write the Times if you feel so inclined.

Email to publisher@nytimes.com and president@nytimes.com if you so choose.  Here’s what I wrote:

I read “Mitt’s No JFK” and I agree.  I am liberl and I am Mormon, a combination you do not see much of within the boundaries of my faith which is why I was somewhat offended by Ms. Dowd’s inaccurate article.  It was misleading and showed intolerance and ignorance which is something I try to stand against while living here in Utah.  I realize that those of the LDS faith have a long way to go, but when articles like this are published it is counterproductive and goes against the very things that the progressive movement stands for.

Agreed. I never really expect unbiased articles from Maureen Dowd, but I would be offended if she talked that way about *any* religion! Here’s what I wrote in my letter: s I read the article written by Maureen Dowd regarding Mitt Romney and his faith, I couldn’t help but notice the contradictions in her argument. She seems to argue that while Mitt Romney’s candidacy should be judged on his record, Mormonism is a weird and secretive organization, whose members are intolerant and ignorant - thus Mr. Romney cannot be trusted to make a good president. Ms. Dowd’s highly biased presentation of Mormonism as pseudo-cult was offensive to me as a practicing member of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter day Saints. I respect people of all faiths, and would hope that they would do the same. Mormons do not all think alike, as evidenced by the presence of Democrats and Republicans serving in Congress (Harry Reid, D-NV; and Orrin Hatch, R-UT; for example). I personally do not support Mitt Romney’s presidential candidacy because I disagree with his platform. To present us as bigots and zealots is to be, in the words of Ms. Dowd’s article, “absolutely intolerant.”

TOTALLY agreed. This was the trashiest piece of faux-journalism I’ve read in a long time. Her ONE source is the guy from Under the Banner of Heaven?!? Oh, but she read his book AND called him- so its like its TWO sources…
